How Does the Area Converter Work?
Every area conversion runs through a single base unit. The converter turns your input into square metres first, then out into the target unit, which avoids the compounding rounding error you get from chaining conversions. The factors themselves are exact by definition for metric units and defined by international agreement for imperial ones, so a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square metres rather than an approximation.

Common Area Conversions and When You Need Them
Property listings are the most common case, since floor area appears in square feet in Singapore, Hong Kong and the United States but in square metres almost everywhere else. A 1,200 square foot apartment is about 111.5 square metres, which is the figure a European buyer will expect.
Land measurement is the second case. Agricultural and development land is quoted in hectares in most of the world and in acres in the United States and parts of Asia, and one hectare is about 2.47 acres. Construction and materials estimating is the third, where paint coverage and flooring are sold per square metre but rooms are often measured in feet.
What Are the Standard Area Measurements?
The square metre is the SI derived unit for area, defined directly from the metre. The hectare, equal to 10,000 square metres, is accepted for use with SI for land. Imperial units are defined by their relationship to the metre through the international yard and pound agreement, which fixed the yard at exactly 0.9144 metres and therefore the square foot exactly. The acre remains defined as 4,840 square yards.
