If you are applying to a university overseas, submitting transcripts for a scholarship, or explaining your grades to an employer in a different country, you often need to convert between GPA and percentage scales. The conversion is not exact since institutions weight grades differently, but standard equivalency tables give a reliable starting point.
Our free GPA calculator supports US 4.0 scale, Singapore CAP, UK percentage, and raw percentage modes. Add your courses, grades, and credits for an instant cumulative GPA.

The following table shows the standard US grade point system with approximate percentage equivalents. Exact cutoffs vary by institution, but these ranges are widely accepted.
| GPA | Letter Grade | Percentage | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.0 | A | 93-100% | Excellent |
| 3.7 | A- | 90-92% | Near excellent |
| 3.3 | B+ | 87-89% | Above average |
| 3.0 | B | 83-86% | Good |
| 2.7 | B- | 80-82% | Slightly above average |
| 2.3 | C+ | 77-79% | Average |
| 2.0 | C | 73-76% | Satisfactory |
| 1.7 | C- | 70-72% | Below average |
| 1.3 | D+ | 67-69% | Passing (barely) |
| 1.0 | D | 63-66% | Minimum pass |
| 0.0 | F | 0-59% | Fail |
Note: Some institutions give A+ a value of 4.3 rather than 4.0. Check the grading policy of the specific institution when exact values matter.
Singapore CAP to Percentage Conversion
NUS, NTU, and SMU use the Cumulative Average Point (CAP) on a 5.0 scale. Here is how it maps to approximate percentage scores:
| CAP | Grade | Approx. % | US Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.0 | A+ / A | 90-100% | A (4.0) |
| 4.5 | A- | 85-89% | A- (3.7) |
| 4.0 | B+ | 80-84% | B+ (3.3) |
| 3.5 | B | 75-79% | B (3.0) |
| 3.0 | B- | 70-74% | B- (2.7) |
| 2.5 | C+ | 65-69% | C+ (2.3) |
| 2.0 | C | 60-64% | C (2.0) |
| 1.5 | D+ | 55-59% | D+ (1.3) |
| 1.0 | D | 50-54% | D (1.0) |
| 0.0 | F | Below 50% | F (0.0) |
Use our GPA calculator in Singapore CAP mode to calculate your cumulative CAP directly from your grades and credit hours, including the degree classification (Honours, Distinction, Merit, Pass).
UK Classification to GPA and Percentage
| UK Classification | Percentage | US GPA Equivalent |

| Lower Second (2:2) | 50-59% | 2.7-3.0 |
| Third Class | 40-49% | 2.0-2.3 |
| Ordinary / Pass | 35-39% | 1.0-1.7 |
Common Conversion Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming a direct formula exists: There is no universal formula because different institutions weight grade thresholds differently. A "B" at one university might require 80%, at another 85%. Use the tables above as estimates, not exact values.
- Forgetting credit weighting: GPA is weighted by credit hours. A 4.0 in a 1-credit elective counts far less than a 3.0 in a 6-credit core module. Always use a weighted calculation like our GPA calculator provides.
- Using US equivalents for scholarship applications: Many scholarship bodies have their own GPA equivalency scales. Check the specific conversion table provided by the awarding body rather than using generic tables.
- Confusing CAP with cumulative percentage: A CAP of 4.0 does not mean 4.0 x 20 = 80%. The 5.0 scale and the percentage scale are not directly proportional. Use the table above for approximate conversions.
The GPA calculator supports all major grading scales and includes a "What grade do I need?" tab to calculate the minimum grade required in remaining courses to hit your target GPA.
