Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip?
A good rule of thumb: 10-12% for basic service, 15-18% for good service, and 20% or more for great service. In the US, 18-20% has become the standard at sit-down restaurants. For takeout, 10-15% is common.
How do I split a bill equally?
First calculate the total including tip, then divide by the number of people. Enter the number of people in the "Split between" field and this calculator shows the per-person amount automatically. Everyone pays the same share of both the bill and the tip.
What is 20% tip on $50?
A 20% tip on a $50 bill is $10. The total you pay is $60. If two people are splitting the bill, each person pays $30.
Is 15% a good tip?
15% is an acceptable tip and was once the standard. Today, most servers consider 18-20% to be a good tip for solid service. Tip 25% or more for exceptional service, and around 10% if the service was below average.
How do I calculate tip percentage?
Tip percentage = (Tip amount / Bill amount) x 100. Example: if you left $9 on a $60 bill: (9 / 60) x 100 = 15%. You can work backwards this way to figure out what percentage you tipped.
