How to Use the GPA Calculator
GPA Formula
Each course contributes quality points equal to its grade points multiplied by its credit hours. Your cumulative GPA is the total quality points divided by total credit hours attempted.
Singapore CAP degree classifications: Highest Distinction (4.50+), Distinction (4.00-4.49), Merit (3.50-3.99), Honours (3.00-3.49), Pass (2.00-2.99).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
For each course, multiply the grade points by the credit hours to get quality points. Add up all quality points, then divide by your total credit hours. Example: A (4.0 pts) in a 3-credit course = 12 quality points. If your GPA-scale total quality points are 42 and you took 12 credits, your GPA is 42/12 = 3.5.
What is a good GPA?
On the US 4.0 scale: 3.7+ is excellent (magna/summa cum laude territory), 3.5-3.69 is very good, 3.0-3.49 is good, and 2.5-2.99 is average. For Singapore CAP (5.0 scale), a CAP above 4.0 earns Honours (Distinction) and above 4.5 earns Honours (Highest Distinction).
How does Singapore CAP work?
CAP (Cumulative Average Point) is used by NUS, NTU, and SMU on a 5.0 scale. A+ and A both give 5.0 points. A- gives 4.5, B+ gives 4.0, B gives 3.5, B- gives 3.0, C+ gives 2.5, C gives 2.0, D+ gives 1.5, D gives 1.0, and F gives 0. Degree classifications range from Pass (CAP 2.0+) to Honours Highest Distinction (CAP 4.5+).
How do I calculate weighted GPA?
Weighted GPA accounts for the credit value of each course. Enter different credit values for each course in this calculator and it automatically weights them. A 4-credit course contributes more to your GPA than a 2-credit course with the same grade.
What GPA do I need for honours?
For Singapore CAP: Honours requires 3.00+, Honours (Merit) requires 3.50+, Honours (Distinction) requires 4.00+, and Honours (Highest Distinction) requires 4.50+. For US institutions, cum laude typically requires 3.5+, magna cum laude 3.7+, and summa cum laude 3.9+, though exact cutoffs vary. Use the "What grade do I need?" tab to calculate your target.
